Sleep apnea is simply a sleep disorder or insomnia. It is characterized by disturb breathing during sleep. This disturbance in breathing during sleep is called apnea. Apnea lasts long and so breaths are missed and it recurs repeatedly throughout during sleep. Usually there is gap of ten seconds between breaths. There is a sleep test called polysomnogram to diagnose sleep apnea. Apnea is also called episode. In clinical term sleep apnea is characterized by five or more than five episodes per hour. There are three forms of sleep apnea or insomnia. They are called complex, central and obstructive apnea. In central sleep apnea lack of respiratory effort creates interruption in breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea breathing is interrupted by blockade in air flow.
