    Acne

Acne is one of the most common problems especially during the teenage years. It is known as a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit. This unit is made out of hair follicles, hair and sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are responsible for the production of sebum that keeps the skin and hair moisturized. It is located everywhere in the body with exception to the soles, palms, toes of the feet and on the lower lip. But it is most abundant on the face, chest and upper neck.

As mentioned earlier, acne breakouts occur more during the adolescence this is because during this age the sebaceous glands tend to enlarge therefore producing more sebum and without proper care will lead to acne breakouts. Hormones particularly the androgens can also have a great influence to the enlargement and excessive production of sebum.

Another reason behind acne is the bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes, this is a normal bacteria found in the skin. This bacterium thrives on sebum as its food for growth and because of the increase sebum production adolescents will have more of the said bacteria when they are suffering from acne.

In line with acne breakouts is the presence of papules, nodules and pustules. The papules are known to be the red bumps found on the face, the pustules are the small skin elevation that contains purulent discharges and nodules are the swelling skin which is caused by the inflammation. The inflammation process is triggered by the bacteria that magnets the white blood cells to attach to the follicle. Because of the increase number of white blood cells in the follicle, it will produce enzymes that will damage the follicle wall and eventually enter to the skins dermis leading the inflammatory process and acne breakouts.

Aside from bacteria and hormonal influence, acne breakouts are also influenced by stress and food intake. Too much stress will disrupt your body’s normal balance and normal hormonal production. With stress our body responds by producing more hormones to keep up with the stressful event. So another good way to stay away from acne is by alleviating stressful events in our life or finding better ways to handle it.

Foods like chocolate, high sugar content and peanuts are also believed to cause acne, but there is no scientific basis for this. Dermatologists believe that these foods are common cause of allergy and with the dry skin that occurs with allergy there will be a greater chance of acne occurrence.

Acne is something that we can always prevent as long we understand the etiology behind it and we take great care of our skin.
