In treatment of diabetes, what you eat plays a major role since both are co-related. In fact, if proper diabetic diet is taken, it can help control diabetes to great extent. In advanced stages of diabetes, proper diabetic diet along with insulin doses or with oral hypoglycemic drugs can control the sugar level. The most important purpose of the diabetic diet is to maintain ideal body weight, by providing adequate nutrition along with normal blood sugar levels in blood. Medical experts, prescribe diet plan for a diabetic patient based on height, weight, age, sex, physical activity and level of diabetes. While prescribing diet, the dietician has to also consider medical complications such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

Since maintaining the body fat level is very important. A dietician assesses calories required by the diabetic. He does that by scheming the carbohydrates, proteins, fats, type of carbohydrate, amount of fiber and so on.

Food we eat every day balances the amount of carbohydrate, since glucose is a sugar released from carbohydrate if one wants to control blood sugar level, one must limit the consumption of simple carbohydrate. So when a dietician prescribes a diet plan, it helps one decide on the type of food to be taken, the amount of food to be taken and also the eating timings. One can definitely decide the food that is best to control and maintain sugar levels in blood. Of course, there is no common diet that works for everyone and nor is there any particular diet that works perfect for any diabetic over a long period.

While planning diabetes diet, one must keep in mind that the fiber should be at least 1.4 oz / day, instead of three heavy meals, 4-5 small meals in mid intervals, replace bakery products and fast foods and fried items by simple whole cooked cereals, and avoiud eating carbohydrates two hours before bedtime, consume fresh fruit and vegetables at least five exchange a day.

Diabetics have to take care while eating since though all foods contain carbohydrate, they also have some energy value. Protein and fat available in the food are converted to glucose in the body. This glucose has some effect on the blood sugar level, which has to be taken care of. To make meals interesting, one can add more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to it. All it means is that you need to select foods that are high in nutrition and low in calories.

Oats, nuts, beans, milks without fats, curd, cheese, egg whites, white meat and chicken, fish, shellfish can be added to the diabetic diet meal since these recipes reduce the cholesterol levels. Wheat bread or products made of wheat flour added with fenugreek seeds, raw fruits, vegetables, cereals and good usage of spices like cinnamon, garlic, onion, bitter melon, guar gum play a major role in maintaining blood sugar level. By eating meals which include baked or boiled recipes over fried ones would help a lot. Minimise use of salt, fried foods, tinned foods can make a difference.
