A lot of women suffer rapid hair fall post pregnancy. Though these two cannot be easily connected, a big number supports that fact the after pregnancy a lot of females face increase in hair fall. So it is important to understand the relation between the two issues.
It is known that every human being loses a little insignificant number of hairs everyday. Often hair can be found on pillows after the afternoon nap or on the floor after one is done with combing hair. Also some hair is shed after they are washed with shampoo while bathing. However in some cases, the hair fall increases drastically after a woman has given birth.
Usually it doesn’t start happening right after pregnancy. Some new mothers experience this excessive hair fall phenomenon after about two to three months. For a lot of such women, it can be very disturbing. However, it should not be taken as a big panic situation. Once the cause behind this process is understood, one would feel comfortable with it.
Shedding of hair is predominantly related to levels of hormones in the body. During pregnancy, the levels of estrogen in women are higher than normal. Estrogen regulates the level of another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is found in men too. Usually DHT is responsible for hair fall as it shrinks the hair follicles thereby weakening the hair roots and making hair thin. But due to high levels of estrogen, a pregnant woman will not suffer hair fall. However, post pregnancy, in a few months estrogen levels subside to normal and allow thinning of hair due to DHT.
After the few months the level of hormones becomes normal and hair fall reduces to normal levels too. This phenomenon varies from one woman to other and thus causes different amounts of hair fall. In certain cases, some women do not experience this problem at all, while in some other cases new mothers suffer several loss of hair. Sometimes, it can take about a year for hormones to return to their normal levels.
One important thing to be understood is that one should not panic as eventually the level of hair fall after pregnancy will normalize for sure. A lot of new mothers suffer from stress and worry about hair loss, which only worsens the situation.
One can also keep certain other things in mind to avoid hair loss during such times. One should use a mild shampoo and avoid over-combing of hair.
Besides, with due consultation with the hair stylist one can shorten hair to avoid excessive thinning. One should definitely avoid chemicals, dyes and colors. Instead of using any drugs or medicines one can make use of homeopathic medicines, which bear no side effects.
However, vitamin supplements can be taken, as they can prove very effective for gentle to average hair loss. Most useful nutrients are Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, Vitamin A, proteins and keratin. The most important thing is that one should avoid stress and get ample sleep and water.
