    To sleep well is important for us to wake up fresh and cheerful the next morning. A good sleep allows our body to rejuvenate. But this is not the case with everyone. There are many people suffering from sleep disorders. Insomnia is a common problem that affects many of us and causes other problems like fatigue, stress, loss of appetite etc. It is important to treat the root cause to get rid of its side effects.

    To know how to sleep well, it is important to know about the main factors causing the sleeping disorder. As we are busy during the day and by the end of it we need to take some rest and sleep well. The activities that we do during the day affect our sleep quite a lot. The time pattern of work, the kind of work (physical or mental), the amount of work we do has a lot to do with our sleeping well or lack of it. An over fatigued body and mind can have a negative effect on the sleep pattern and particularly on sound sleep. The consumption of beverages, tea, coffee and carbonated colas which contain high amount of caffeine affect our sleep especially when consumed close to the sleeping time. This is because these drinks make the mind and body alert, thus it keeps the sleep away and prolongs the sleeping time and pattern. This casts a negative effect on the sleeping time and pattern and the rest when sleeping time is reduced.

    The consumption of alcohol and the activity of smoking if carried closer to sleeping time cause bad effect on proper sleep and may cause insomnia. A person should have a time schedule for sleep and should follow it. A sleep schedule should be maintained on daily basis, it should follow a time to sleep and a time to rise. If this sleep pattern is continued, the body and mind is able to get proper rest.

    The person should be free from any kind of worry and feel relaxed at the time he goes to bed to get sleep. Don’t work till late hours. If you have a hobby which you enjoy much, you can follow it, like reading or singing or listening to music, writing. These activities soothe the mind and the body because you enjoy it and forget about the worries of the day and get proper sleep as it helps induce sleep. Other relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation etc also help in making you sleep well as they have a calming effect on a person’s mind.

    If you are having a sleep disorder, avoid taking short naps in between. Doing adequate physical exercise will help you get a good sleep. When you find that you are not likely to go to sleep within the next 10-15 minutes of closing your eyes, then get up and get yourself involved in something that doesn’t interest you. You will get bored of that activity very soon and will feel sleepy. This is an effective technique to cure insomnia.

    After analyzing the causes and effects of the problem of insomnia, one needs to decide to follow the program to deal with it to overcome it or it should at least be reduced to the minimum and within manageable limits.
